
The charity was founded in 1843 by William Willams, a solicitor's clerk, who wanted to use education to break the cycle of deprivation and poverty among street children in London.
Shaftesbury Young People (formerly known as Shaftesbury Homes & Arethusa) has retained ‘Shaftesbury’ in the name in memory of our great patron, the 7th Earl of Shaftesbury.
Over the past three centuries, the charity has provided a home and education for thousands of homeless boys and girls.
