Children's Residential Services
Within a Shaftesbury Young People residential environment, the emphasis is on providing high quality primary care. We believe that this approach, consistently applied, is of immense therapeutic value to most young people looked after in residential care.
All young people require a high level of care and nurturing. The young people are individuals with experiences that may have been painful and difficult and which may have left them feeling unhappy, angry, hurt or anxious. Despite their negative experiences, the young people will have many strengths and degrees of resilience that hopefully they are able to build upon.
Each young person is a unique and precious individual. Their needs are a combination of the normal developmental needs for that age and the special needs arising from their own experiences including neglect, harm and trauma. In planning for their care, we look at needs in relation to the young persons:
-
health
-
education
-
emotional needs and behavioural development
- development of identity
- family, social relationships and environmental factors
- social presentation
- self care
-
aspirations for the future

We aim to work in an atmosphere of trust and respect, listening to and responding appropriately to children's anger, frustration and pain. We reinforce positive behaviour and aim to understand, but not excuse, inappropriate behaviour.
None of this is done in isolation but by staff working closely with the young person’s parents or previous carers, social workers and other professionals.
All Shaftesbury Young People children’s homes are committed to safe, transparent and open practices and independent scrutiny from legitimate sources is welcomed and facilitated.
