Tanya came to our residential care service after a breakdown within her family home. Initially she displayed typical behaviour for someone of her profile. She was regularly truant from school, pushing boundaries and self destructive.
On arrival she was enrolled at an Academy but due to her behaviour was given a reduced time table of three half sessions a week. But despite her disruptive attitude, Tanya is a very likeable young girl with good potential.
With the support and dedication of Shaftesbury staff and education advisors, Tanya's behaviour improved tremendously. She began to show commitment and focus towards her education and she had the opportunity to attend school full time. She even received an education award at Shaftesbury Young People’s Annual Achievement Awards.
This summer Tanya sat three GCSEs and achieved grades she was extremely proud of considering all the time she had missed due to truancy.
During her 16 months within our residential service, Tanya has taken part in all house activities, new initiatives and workshops run within the home. Most impressively, she recently spent two days on an interview panel alongside managers. She showed maturity, commitment and professionalism throughout the process and gave constructive criticism on all candidates.
Tanya recently moved on into a one bedroom flat which she, quote: ‘absolutely loves.’ She received a place in college to study ITC and began at the beginning of September 2010.
Tanya learnt a lot while she was with us and she left with a whole new outlook on life. When she arrived, she was in the same situation as so many young people today, but with the support of Shaftesbury and her own personal dedication, Tanya’ future is hers for the making.
