ABOUT US
Our work reunites separated siblings, many of whom have endured numerous family separations within the Care System. Using residential activity camps we support siblings to rebuild meaningful relationships. This project enables siblings to develop a sense of belonging and identity which is essential in order for them to positively move forward in their lives.
THE IMPORTANCE OF SIBLINGS UNITED
Regular and meaningful contact is extremely important for
separated siblings. The collapse of sibling relationships due to separation in care can have serious implications for young people through loss of identity, support, companionship and continuity (Edwards et al, 2005). Through our work with looked after children in residential care we are aware of the lifelong impact that separation has on a child’s emotional, mental health and social wellbeing. Sibling contact is crucial for preserving a young person’s identity and safeguarding a family support network which is essential when they leave care and are most isolated and vulnerable.
Research carried out among children in care by A National Voice (2006) identified that 84% of respondents with birth siblings do not live with them and 75% of separated siblings have difficulties seeing each other.
THE SIBLINGS CAMPS
Contact between separated siblings is made through week long activity camps designed to rebuild sibling relationships. We use a therapeutic framework of activities sensitive to the fact that beneficiaries may not know each other well due to their separation.

Our first camp opened in August 2008 and was the first of its kind in the UK. Siblings participate in adventure, personal development and trust building activities that provide opportunities to get to know each other, share experiences and build memories together.
STAFFING
The camps are run by qualified residential staff and youth workers as well as registered volunteers.
GOALS FOR THE PROGRAMME
- Provide the opportunity for separated siblings to meet and get to know each other in a fun, healthy and safe environment
- Increase the contact between siblings separated by care
- Support youth in care to keep their identity and sense of belonging through family ties
- Maintain family support networks to reduce the risk of isolation when leaving care
- Assist siblings to deal with unresolved issues and anxieties that develop as a result of being care
- Boost siblings' self esteem and confidence
- Improve the emotional wellbeing of siblings separated due to care, adoption or kinship care in the UK
The programme wishes to develop ongoing relationships with a range of partners who have expertise and interest regarding the welfare of children and young people in the areas of adoption and fostering, residential provision, parents and kinship carers. If you work with young people who would benefit from increased sibling contact, please get in touch.
