London

Providing a high quality supported shared accommodation for young people for up to 18 months across three boroughs; Wandsworth, Lambeth and Lewisham.

Each project offers accommodation to young single homeless people in a stable, dependable and supportive environment. Here they can gain the skills, confidence and experience to prepare them to successfully take on the responsibilities of independent self-contained accommodation.

London Supported Housing believes in every young persons potential, no matter who they are, what they have done or what they have been through.

Every young person who comes to London Housing has their own story to tell about their life experiences; their needs, goals, aspirations and challenges. We work to ensure that every young person finds their voice and can be healthy, learn, develop, achieve and to gain an independent and positive place in society.

Brenda's Story

Brenda was frustrated with how life was going and fed up with the constant fighting and arguing at home. Brenda did not get on with her mother's boyfriend and she felt that her mother was putting her boyfriend’s needs over hers. Brenda said that stress was “doing her head in” and she felt unwanted, so she decided to seek out alternative accommodation. Brenda was offered accommodation at a hostel in Camberwell, but refused the offer because she said “it was packed with people”. The second offer of accommodation was with Shaftesbury Young People and Brenda stated that she “jumped at the opportunity”. Brenda received her tenancy at the age of sixteen.

Brenda said that with the move and everything else that was taking place in her life; her college took her off roll as they thought she had missed too many days. This left her feeling devalued and confused.

The team provided Brenda support including a focus on developing independent skills and empowerment. Brenda continued to apply for further education and to her surprise, by the end of that month, she was offered another place in September to complete her course in Government and Politics, Sociology and Business Studies.

Brenda says that: “Once I moved into Shaftesbury Young People Supported Housing Accommodation, everything has just been on the up and up. While waiting for my course in September I’ve also started a course in being a lifeguard at the Lido in Herne Hill, where I look forward to being outside in the summer”.

Brenda added that whilst being at London Supported Housing she had learnt how to cope by herself and be independent. Brenda said that her biggest ambition once she has completed her course, is to attend university and pursue studies in either Law or Social Sciences. “I would like to be a commercial lawyer” she stated.
